Neighborhoods in Spokane
There are quite a few Spokane neighborhoods to choose from, depending on your needs and desires, and where you want to live. Some of the Spokane neighborhoods include Five Mile Prairie, Riverside, Rockwood, the Garland District and Millwood, among many others.
North
Neighborhoods in the north are considered to range from the Mead area in the north all the way to downtown. Most of the area is residential and there are homes that range in price and style for a variety of different income levels. There are also plenty of retail areas in the North part of Spokane including Northpointe Plaza and Northtown Mall as well as other major shopping areas. You can easily visit the north part of Spokane by taking Division Street, where you will see it all. Spokane’s northern neighborhoods are also close to Franklin Park and Whitworth College.
South
The Southern area of Spokane is simply a term used to include all of the neighborhoods that are south of Downtown. These neighborhoods range from contemporary to historic and include Lincoln Heights, South Perry, Cannon’s Addition, Comstock, Moran Prairie, Brownes Mountain as well as Manito Park. This area has many beautiful turn-of-the-century Victorian and Craftsman homes. From downtown as you drive south you will be going uphill, giving this area it's nickname the "South Hill." Sacred Heart Medical Center and the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist are located in the south side of Spokane.
Spokane Valley
To the east of Spokane lies the city of Spokane Valley. It was incorporated in 2003 and is called “the Valley” by most locals. The majority of unincorporated neighborhoods surrounding this new city of Spokane Valley are included. Some of the neighborhoods that make up Spokane Valley include Dishman, Millwood, Otis Orchards, and others. Many of the homes in the Spokane Valley have large lots and are surrounded by Ponderosa pine trees.
West Central
The close-in western portion of Spokane is West Central and it includes Emerson Garfield, Peaceful Valley, and Riverside neighborhoods. Nettleton’s Addition is the state’s largest National Historic District. Real Estate values continue to appreciate in this area, spurred by the urban development called Kendall Yards which is now under construction just south of the Spokane River. The area is experiencing restoration and revitalization similar to what is happening in the downtown area.
West Plains The larger area to the west of the city of Spokane is generally referred to as the West Plains. This includes the cities of Cheney, Marshall, Airway Heights and Medical Lake. This area is charactarized by wide open spaces, and is known for its many excellent fishing lakes including Clear Lake, Silver Lake, Medical Lake, Badger Lake and more. Fairchild Air Force Base is also located in this area.
